Horsey Hoofnote: Quarter Horses got their name because of their ability to sprint short distances, especially a quarter of a mile. In colonial America, these horses became famous for winning quarter-mile match races on main streets and open fields. Their powerful hindquarters and explosive speed made them unbeatable over that distance, and the name stuck!
